Acox Liquid Treatment for Bird Coccidiosis ("Going Light")

Coccidiosis is a devastating parasitic disease that causes a high mortality rate in young chicks. Commonly affecting greenfinches, canaries, British finches, and pigeons, this condition—often referred to as "going light"—requires swift and effective intervention.

Acox is a highly effective, easy-to-use liquid treatment designed specifically to combat coccidiosis in birds. It is administered directly into your bird's drinking water to help manage and prevent severe infestations.

CRITICAL WARNING: DO NOT give Acox when chicks are in the nest. Always read the label before use.

Understanding Coccidiosis and "Going Light"

"Going light" is primarily caused by a protozoan parasite known as Coccidia. While adult birds frequently carry Coccidia with few visible issues, they can easily pass the parasite to their babies during feeding. Because young chicks have poorly developed immune systems, they are unable to fight off the heavy parasite load.

How the infection progresses:

  • Bloodstream Invasion: The Coccidia parasites enter the bloodstream, changing form (often referred to as atoxoplasma).

  • Organ Damage: The parasites infiltrate and damage the liver and spleen. While there is still enough functioning liver, the chicks appear to grow normally.

  • The Critical Point (8-12 Weeks): As liver damage worsens, birds will spend a lot of time eating but will rapidly lose weight ("go light") and ultimately die.

By the time physical symptoms appear, the liver damage is permanent. While feeding specialized diets can reduce the liver's workload and save some birds, the liver will not fully repair, leaving them permanently vulnerable.

Prevention and Management Strategies

The key to managing Coccidia is prevention. While it is nearly impossible to eliminate the parasite completely, reducing the Coccidia load in adult birds is crucial. We recommend a three-tiered approach:

  1. First Choice (Feast Eggfood): Feed your birds our Feast Eggfood. It contains natural anti-coccidial herbs and powerful immune support to keep infestation levels down before and throughout the breeding season.

  2. Second Choice (Flourish Supplement): If you prefer a different brand of soft food, add our Flourish supplement to their diet. This provides the exact same immune support and anti-coccidial herbs found in Feast.

  3. Third Choice (Targeted Treatment with Acox): While we advocate for natural prevention, genuine outbreaks require stronger action. We recommend using Acox in addition to Feast or Flourish for the current and following breeding seasons to get the problem under control. (Reminder: Do not use Acox while chicks are in the nest).

Acox Application & Dosage Guide

Acox is a water-soluble treatment designed for simple administration.

  • Standard Dosage: Add 6 ml of Acox per 1 litre of drinking water. Administer for exactly one week.

  • Severe Cases: In particularly bad outbreaks, you may continue treatment for a second week at a half-dose (3 ml per 1 litre of water).

  • Active Ingredient: Amprolium Hydrochloride

Important Safety Information: Always read the product label prior to application. DO NOT GIVE WHEN CHICKS ARE IN THE NEST.
